Alan has advised on all aspects of intellectual property across a broad spectrum of industry sectors in a career with Bristows of more than 35 years. In recent years he has focused on patent matters, including less common types of cases such as entitlement and employee compensation as well as more standard infringement, DNI and revocation cases. His experience also extends to standard essential patents and the consequent FRAND issues. He has led numerous cases to trial in the Patents Court and Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (formerly the Patents County Court) in the latter case including appearing as lead advocate in appropriate cases (Alan is a qualified Solicitor-Advocate with full rights of audience before all the UK’s civil courts).
Alan has advised many prestigious clients in technically complex disputes. He has a particular interest in chemical matters but has advised on a broad range of technologies from small molecule pharmaceuticals to telecoms. Many of his cases involve an international element, and he is experienced in dealing with the relationship between UK and EPO litigation.
Alan is Secretary of the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court Users’ Committee (2001 to date); member and former Chair (2001-2005) of AmCham EU (the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union) and an associate member of CIPA. He teaches English patent litigation for the University of Hagen (Germany).
Alan is an acknowledged authority on the Unified Patent Court and unitary patent dossier, and sits on the UK IPO’s European Focus Group which advises on Government policy in this area. In 2014 he was appointed chair of AIPPI’s unitary patent/UPC Committee and continues to sit on that Committee as one of two UK representatives.
