Maria Ryan

Associate – Patent litigation

Maria advises on a diverse range of patent litigation issues in both the technology and life science sectors. In addition to UK litigation in both the High Court and Court of Appeal, Maria is experienced in working on multi-jurisdiction coordination for both telecommunications and pharmaceutical patent holders.

Prior to joining Bristows, Maria completed a masters in bio‑inorganic chemistry during which she developed multi-enzymatic cascade reactions with the aim to promote the use of ‘green’ catalysts in chemical manufacturing. She enjoys bringing her technical background to a range of projects and complex issues.

Maria has worked on a number of patent litigation cases in both the life sciences and technology sectors. Some of her work highlights include:

  • Panasonic v Xiaomi and OPPO – Patents Court and Court of Appeal litigation relating to novel interim licence declarations, UK FRAND litigation and multijurisdictional coordination of litigation in the UK, Germany and the UPC.
  • Sandoz & Polpharma v Biogen – patent revocation and infringement proceedings in the Patents Court relating to anti-JCV antibody testing patents prior to launch of Tyruko®, Sandoz’s biosimilar to Biogen’s Tysabri® product for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
  • Novartis v Teva & Ors – Patents Court and Court of Appeal litigation concerning the availability of Arrow declarations for use in foreign proceedings.

She also has experience in competition law matters and continues to work closely with Bristows’ Competition team.

During her training, Maria spent three months on secondment in the legal team of a leading medical technology company where she worked on contract negotiations, regulatory advice and provided corporate support to the Company Secretary.

Maria is passionate about sustainability and is heavily involved with internal environmental initiatives as well as being a member of the Greener Litigation Pledge’s Court Engagement Working Group.
