Julian has been defending national and global publishers for over 20 years – including acting for newspapers, broadcasters, entertainment platforms and media insurers. A decade spent in a senior editorial legal role within Associated Newspapers, followed by several years as the Head of Litigation for TikTok Europe, gives Julian unique experience among media litigation practitioners.
Julian’s practice covers defamation, privacy, data protection, contempt and reporting restrictions and other related areas. He is also expert in providing pre-publication regulatory and legal advice and defending injunction threats.
Julian’s recent UK litigation work includes:
- Defending TikTok against a class action alleging misuse of private information and unlawful processing of data.
- Defence of various libel and data protection claims brought against Harper Collins and “Putin’s People” author Catherine Belton by three Russian billionaires and Rosneft Oil Company – a case for which his previous firm won “Litigation Team of the Year” at the Lawyer Awards 2022.
There is no substitute to having been embedded at a senior level and over the years Julian has shared the stresses of imminent print deadlines, shaped ground-breaking investigations, made hundreds of high-stakes decisions, and won the hard-earned trust of editors and senior executives. He has also been responsible for defending and driving strategy in high-profile and high-stakes claims across the UK, EMEA, SEA and AU/NZ.
