Luke Norton

Associate - Patent Litigation

Headshot holding tile

Luke’s practice focuses on advising clients on their contentious patent matters across a wide spectrum of technologies. With experience in both the life sciences and technology sectors, Luke is able to quickly gain an understanding of the complex technology which underpins his clients’ businesses.

Luke’s understanding of both the legal issues and commercial context of his advice means that he becomes a trusted advisor to his clients.

Prior to joining Bristows, Luke trained and qualified at a leading international law firm. Luke’s focus once he qualified was (and still is) complex patent litigation disputes. However, he also draws on his past experience advising on varied intellectual property rights including copyright disputes relating to AI software, and negotiating licensing and supply agreements for life sciences clients.

Some of Luke’s work highlights include:

  • Acting as the leading junior associate in multiple patent litigation matters before the UK High Court, both for and against patentees.
  • Supporting and advising local counsel in novel disputes relating to the SPC Waiver Regulation, including attending hearings at the Dutch Court of Appeal and across other European jurisdictions.
  • Co-ordinating parallel litigation in 10+ countries, instructing and managing local counsel on behalf of his client.

Luke places great emphasis on pro-bono work. As a student he worked on capital punishment appeals in Washington DC, and as a qualified solicitor has advised pro-bono clients on wide ranging subjects including copyright infringement and disability discrimination. Luke is passionate about inclusion and social mobility, and was on the Social Mobility Committee at his previous firm.
