James Batsford

Associate – Competition and Antitrust

James is an associate in the competition team at Bristows, where he advises on a broad range of contentious and non-contentious competition law matters.

He has experience in complex competition litigation, including large-scale damages actions and multi-party proceedings before the Competition Appeal Tribunal, as well as cases in the High Court and Supreme Court. His work also involves advising on judicial review of regulatory decisions and assisting companies in responding to European Commission investigations and information requests.

Alongside his litigation work, James advises on merger control and broader competition law issues across a range of sectors, with a particular interest in emerging issues at the intersection of competition, data and digital regulation.  He also delivers competition law compliance advice and training.

Recent work includes:

  • Acting for Google in ongoing, long-running private damages litigation
  • Acting for telecoms network provider CityFibre on its appeal against Ofcom’s ‘Equinox’ decision
  • Acting for mobile network operator Sure on its acquisition of Airtel

James has written for publications including Life Sciences Intellectual Property Review and the Journal of European Competition Law & Practice.
