Apprenticeships at Bristows are another path to success that we pride ourselves on as a firm.

Our apprenticeship programmes are designed to create a platform for success and cater to a range of learning styles and professional disciplines. It combines first-hand relevant work experience in a city law firm with a recognised qualification.

Apprenticeships at Bristows provide an alternative pathway to success and aligns with our HR and DE&I strategy. The firm offers roles in both business services and legal business groups, with schemes specific to apprentices in place, such as mentor programmes, skilled coaching and different funding support options. We are constantly growing the opportunities for people from all backgrounds to join the firm.

Business Services Apprenticeships

Our business services apprenticeship programme first launched in 2013 in the IT department and has been expanding ever since. We now offer apprenticeships in many of our departments, including:

  • Marketing & Business Development
  • HR
  • Finance
  • General Office

This provides the chance to enter the workplace through a different route and gain a qualification in a specific profession.

Our extensive track record of hiring apprentices has enabled us to design a detailed induction and training plan to ensure a great experience for all apprentices. We work with a number of leading apprenticeship providers to ensure access to the best resources available.

Opportunities for business services apprentices are typically available in the Spring and Summer months and will be visible on our current opportunities page. Candidates are required to complete an application form, those who are successful will be invited to a telephone interview. The final stage will involve an assessment day. Solicitor Apprenticeships

Our solicitor apprenticeship scheme is a six–year Level 7 apprenticeship programme, which gives you the chance to gain an LLB (Hons) and qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. Each apprentice begins in an advisory or transactional department and initially rotates every 12 months to a different department for four years. Our apprentices will then join our trainee rotations, which consists of three and sixth month seats for two years. You can see our Graduate Recruitment hub page for more information.

From day one our apprentices are submerged into life at Bristows, with the support of the whole firm. One day of the working week will be dedicated to studying with a chosen university and the other days will be spent gaining practical experience. The solicitor apprentices are paired with a partner in each seat they rotate to, as well as sitting with an associate and a trainee, to ensure they are given the upmost support. The Learning & Development team and the trainees at Bristows work with the solicitor apprentices to provide training on basic legal skills to kick start the programme and build a solid foundation for our aspiring solicitors.

Our DE&I strategy is integrated into our apprenticeships by reducing the barriers of entry into law. We are a member of City Century which is a syndicate of 50 law firms who are promoting solicitor apprenticeships in London. The aim is to revolutionise the legal landscape by empowering students from diverse backgrounds to pursue a career they may have never thought possible. We have created two additional funding options for solicitor apprentices: a relocation payment and a getting started grant. This ensures the cost barriers to entry are reduced. Assessment day

For apprenticeship positions, Bristows typically holds an assessment day at the firm’s offices. This enables candidates to showcase their talents across a range of activities and provides an insight into the firm and the people who work here.

A small group of candidates, who have been through the application and initial interview process, are selected to attend the assessment day. The assessment centre consists of written, group and individual tasks so we can assess the candidates in a variety of areas. The group task looks at collaboration, leadership and communication skills, whilst the written skills looks at research, planning and outlining skills.

Another part of the assessment day is a presentation, where candidates are asked to prepare a slideshow about a topic of their choice. This can be on any topic and assesses organisation and confidence. The rest of the day is followed by an interview and a comprehensive task.

A number of our current apprentices have shared their advice for prospective apprentices for the application process and assessment day:

  • Research the firm, understand different practice areas and the firm’s mission, vision, and values - at Bristows we are proud of our culture so to understand and have a strong association to the culture is important.
  • Prepare for different scenarios - for different tasks you can practice different methods. For group tasks, ensure you are getting involved and being yourself and practicing what might come up. The interview stage is a relaxed environment to ensure we can get to know the candidate so although we want you to be yourself, make sure you are prepared for the interview and potential questions that may come your way.
  • Be yourself - we want our apprentices to really fit in at Bristows and enjoy this exciting venture.
