Eden has experience in representing clients in litigation before the English Courts and also as an Authorised Representative before the UPC. A particularly active area of Eden’s work in litigation is SEP/FRAND cases in the telecoms space.

In addition to active litigation, Eden also regularly advises on freedom-to-operate projects, patent infringement and validity analysis, and offensive/defensive patent strategies.

Technology areas of his previous work are wide-ranging and, in addition to telecoms, include voice coding, medical devices, consumer goods, AI and blockchain, oil and gas technology, aerospace engineering, process engineering, refrigeration systems, security systems, robotics and biometric analysis.

Eden also has a keen interest in patent law issues arising in the field of artificial intelligence, attending conference focussed on this topic to keep abreast of issues as well as giving talks on the subject.

Having previously trained as a patent attorney, Eden has experience across the full life cycle of patents, including drafting and prosecuting applications through to grant before both the UK Intellectual Property Office and European Patent Office (EPO). His previous work has also included opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO, managing international patent portfolios and carrying out freedom-to-operate analysis. Eden now leverages this comprehensive experience of patents in patent litigation.

Some of Eden’s work highlights include:

  • Panasonic v Xiaomi and OPPO – advising Panasonic in proceedings relating to LTE SEPs, FRAND, patent infringement and validity, coordinating multijurisdictional litigation in the UK, Germany, the UPC and China.
  • Philips v OPPO – advising Philips in proceedings relating to FRAND, LTE and HSDPA SEPs, patent infringement and validity, including anti-suit relief.
  • Winnow v Orbisk – representing Winnow in one of the first infringement actions at the Hague Local Division of the UPC.
  • Advising a leading manufacturer of auto-injector devices on patent freedom-to-operate, both offensive and defensive.
  • Advising a large multinational in the consumer goods space on product launch and risk minimisation strategy.

Eden writes regularly on reported patent cases in the UK, EPO and UPC on behalf of CIPA, Kluwer and EPLAW patent blogs and contributes to Bristows’ annual review of patent cases.

Prior to joining Bristows Eden trained as a patent attorney, qualifying in both Europe and the UK.

Eden is a tutor for the ‘How to Pass FD2’ course, helping trainee patent attorneys pass the UK patent drafting examination by providing feedback and live sessions on FD2 past paper attempts.

Eden is a fellow of the Chartered Instituted of Patent Attorneys and is also a member of the European Patent Institute.
