Matthew advises on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious competition law matters and ‘FRAND’ standard essential patent licensing disputes. He is recommended by Legal 500 for both Competition Litigation and EU and Competition.
Matthew has significant experience of competition litigation in both the High Court and Competition Appeal Tribunal, including the coordination of litigation across multiple jurisdictions. Matthew has also been involved in several of the biggest FRAND cases to take place before the English Courts to date.
In addition to his litigation work, Matthew has also assisted a number of companies in responding to investigations and requests initiated by both the CMA and the European Commission.
Matthew regularly advises on competition law issues arising out of distribution, licensing and settlement agreements across all sectors. He also gives advice and training on competition law compliance.

- Acting for Google as the lead associate in an ongoing, long-running, private damages litigation
- Acting on an ongoing, high-profile, CMA investigation
- Acting as the lead associate in a successful intervention to defend a judicial review challenge brought on multiple grounds
- Acting for the Evening Standard and The Independent as the lead associate in a successful challenge of the government’s attempt to intervene in the sale of a minority stake to overseas investors
- Advising a number of SEP holders and implementers in licensing negotiations on topics such as FRAND offer methodology and anti-suit injunctions
- Representing IPCom in its FRAND case against Vodafone
- Representing ZTE in the Conversant FRAND litigation
- Representing Samsung in the Unwired Planet FRAND litigation
- Acting for a pharmaceutical company in a claim involving post-patent expiry royalties
