The Safety Net

Online safety resource hub

In a time where most of us manage our lives online and children are accessing the internet from an ever younger age, the demand for regulation in this sector has never been greater.

Where to first?

The risk that internet users, and in particular children, may be exposed to harms when accessing online content is significant, and the UK is one of the first countries to implement a comprehensive regime in an attempt to combat this.

The Online Safety Act (OSA) received royal assent in October 2023. Ofcom, as the Regulator for the OSA, is in the process of consulting on a series of regulatory guidance and codes of practice, which will gradually bring the provisions of the OSA into force. Since December 2024, a number of these regulatory documents have been published in final form, meaning that certain aspects of the OSA, including those relating to illegal harms measures and age assurance, are now in force.

The OSA and Ofcom’s accompanying codes and guidance are vast and complex and can be challenging for service providers to get to grips with. The content on The Safety Net is aimed at breaking all of this down into digestible chunks, to help service providers understand whether they are in scope of the OSA, what their obligations are and what Ofcom’s powers are in relation to this new regime.
