Bristows partner Stephen Smith quoted in Global Competition Review

CMA to potentially investigate the completed acquisition by CVS Group of fellow veterinary service provider The Vet

EU and UK competition law specialist, Stephen Smith, commented on the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) potentially reviewing CVS Group’s purchase of The Vet, with the antitrust enforcer raising competition concerns relating to five of the eight practices it acquired.

Stephen Smith noted concerns related to specific locations, which he felt may mean that CVS was already a strong player in these areas and that The Vet provided some important local competition. In addition, the CMA’s decision to seek remedies ahead of a potential in-depth review highlights that the enforcer is willing to investigate competition concerns whether it be in local markets or nationally.
