Sophie Lawrance quoted in Global Competition Review

03.01.2025

EU and UK competition law expert, Sophie Lawrance, has been quoted in Global Competition Review’s article, ‘Motorola targeted over excessive pricing in standalone UK class action’.

The piece summarises a ‘government-backed lawsuit alleging Motorola overcharged emergency services for its Airwave network’.

‘Bristows partner Sophie Lawrance said that she is not aware of another competition class action funded by the government, but that it makes sense in this instance as the majority of the class are likely to be state-funded organisations, so the government stands to benefit indirectly if the claim is successful.’

Sophie further commented that the ‘new Motorola claim is likely to face similar challenges [as presented in Le Patourel v BT] in relation to proving unfairness, as Motorola is likely to point to factors such as the importance of the Airwave service as a piece of critical infrastructure to justify higher prices’.
