Naoise is a dual-qualified patent litigator, admitted to practice before the Unified Patent Court and as a patent attorney in both Europe and the United States. With a strong academic background in life science and computer science, he is adept at handling complex disputes across both life sciences and high-tech sectors, with a particular affinity for companies operating at the intersection of these fields. As UPC Director at Bristows, he is responsible for coordinating the firm’s ongoing activity in this forum.

Naoise’s career spans private practice and senior in-house roles across Europe, Japan, and Australia, including leading IP functions in both established and scaling companies. He has a deep technical understanding of the matters he handles, reflected in him being named as an inventor on more than 20 PCT patent applications during his time in-house.

He spent over seven years at Intellectual Ventures, where he managed large patent portfolios and led global patent licensing and assertion campaigns leveraging a portfolio of over 30,000 IP assets. As VP of IP at Nasdaq-listed biotech GH Research, he built the IP function from the ground up, overseeing both patent portfolio development and commercial IP strategy and governance. Most recently, he served as Head of IP and General Counsel at high-growth video game hardware company Byowave, where he advised on a broad range of IP, commercial, and corporate legal matters.

Some of Naoise’s key work highlights include:

  • Managing local European counsel in a number of different jurisdictions in prolonged high profile, multi patent dispute focusing on standards essential and implementation patents.
  • Devising a patent development and assertion strategy in the crowded and contentious emerging field of psychedelic medicine.
  • Managing patent development and Freedom to Operate strategy in respect of complex medical device elements.
  • Leading technical infringement and validity negotiations in respect of patents in a number of multimillion dollar patent licensing discussions.
  • Developing and managing the IP portfolio of a high potential gaming hardware scaleup.
  • Managing, supporting and participating in a significant number of EPO oppositions and appeals.

Naoise is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Patent Law at Trinity College Dublin, where he has taught International Patent Law to LLM students for more than ten years. Keeping abreast of the international picture allows him to maintain an international perspective in all of his work. Previous academic work has included teaching as a Visiting Professor on Temple University’s ABA-approved LLM program on their Tokyo campus.

He also maintains a keen interest in matters of IP Policy and was the founder of the Corporate IP Goup at Ibec, Ireland’s foremost business lobby. He currently acts as the Chair of Ibec’s related IP Network and represents Ibec on Business Europe’s Patents Working Group.
