My experience as a trainee

Solomon Chann explains why he chose to apply for a Trainee Solicitor position at Bristows — and how he’s found the experience.

Whilst researching modules to select for my law undergrad, it just so happened that Bristows had released a podcast on the topic I was interested in studying – a 20-minute listen and a couple internet rabbit holes later, and Bristows stood out very quickly as a firm that I could see myself doing genuinely interesting work in.

This brought me to my first proper interaction with Bristows. After applying for and attending one of the firm’s full-day IP workshops, I saw associates guide us through the fundamentals of IP law, a full panel of trainees speak openly about their TCs, and even one the firm’s joint managing partners share their experiences. Through getting to meet everyone, it became clear that Bristows invested in their people, and that this was a place where I would feel welcomed and supported.

Some research later, and I formally applied to Bristows – this involved three rounds of interviews (one recorded, one on Teams, and one in-person), as well as a brief written assessment which did not require preparation or prior legal knowledge. I found Bristows’ process refreshingly human, and felt my interviewers were genuinely trying to know me (there were also no Watson Glaser tests or lengthy behavioural psychology assessments!)

In my time with Bristows so far, I would attest to the firm’s reputation for its genuinely friendly culture and the investment they put into their trainees. From an early stage, I have been trusted with a high level of responsibility, whilst always knowing that team members would be kind and patient in guiding me where needed. So far, I have sat with two teams, and here’s some work I’ve been particularly proud to be a part of:

Real Estate (3 months)

  • Taking the lead on several small transactions (liaising with counterparties, producing first drafts of lease agreements, handling completion calls)
  • Researching and delivering legal advice during a client call to a leading pharmaceutical company

Competition (6 months)

  • Preparing for and attending fact witness interviews for two cases involving a tech giant, and major pharmaceutical company
  • Taking first cut at drafting a wide range of documents (including client advice, settlement letters, and intersolicitor correspondence)
  • Conducting research on developing areas of law and unfamiliar markets

I have just started my third seat in IP Litigation, which is a 6-month seat that all trainees at Bristows will complete at some point during their TC.  It should come as no surprise that in my first week, I have had the opportunity to get knee-deep in a complex damages claim between two major supermarket chains, and look forward to learning loads in the process.

Overall, there has been no shortage of interesting work, and I can feel confident to take on these challenges knowing that I have a supportive team with me and a firm that is willing to invest in my development. In my time with the firm I’ve consistently been surprised and deeply appreciative of the time and energy colleagues will volunteer to explain difficult concepts to me, or just be a friendly face. There are very few places in city law where you can get the best of both worlds, and Bristows has somehow managed it!
