My experience as a trainee
Daniel Savvides explains why he chose to apply for a Trainee Solicitor position at Bristows — and how he’s found the experience.
I decided to study Law at university because I liked the idea of applying logic to problems in order to find a solution. I was also interested in a career in law and was hoping I would gain an understanding of legal work during my degree, which was quite practical. When I was nearing the end of my degree, I decided a career in law was something I was quite keen on, and I started to consider whether I’d rather be a solicitor or barrister. In the end, while I enjoyed black-letter law, I decided it was important for me to work closely alongside my colleagues and clients and thus I decided to apply for training contracts.
Bristows stood out to me as a firm with excellent litigation practices, along with great clients and a well-regarded working environment. I was also drawn to the firm as it became clear that trainees at Bristows receive high quality training and experience that is not common within all City firms.
I found the application process to be relatively straight-forward – though challenging – and I actually enjoyed my interviews with Senior Associates and Partners. I felt that they legitimately wanted me to do well and put me at ease. I was asked interesting, thought-provoking questions that reinforced my belief that Bristows was the best place for me to start my career.
After accepting my training contract offer, I sat the SQE along with other trainees in my cohort. It was really nice to get to know the other trainees before starting at the firm, and the strong bonds formed amongst my fellow trainees have been invaluable since starting my training contract.
In my first year, I have sat in 3 teams: Commercial Disputes (6 months), Brands, Designs, Copyright (3 months) and, currently, Competition (6 months). Across these seats, I have had a real variety of work – both contentious and non-contentious – and been exposed to a range of clients. I have had the opportunity to work on (and attend) a trial in the High Court, advise clients on recent trends in advertising standards, and contribute to settlement proceedings. This range of work and level of responsibility is precisely why I see Bristows as an ideal place to train.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bristows since joining. It has been extremely satisfying to find that the culture and work at the firm is exactly how it is portrayed. Everyone is very friendly and approachable, and I have enjoyed plenty of time directly working with, and learning from, the Partners, who are all bona fide experts in their respective areas. As a trainee, I have felt very well supported by the firm. My colleagues have been very generous with their time and seem genuinely invested in my development as a lawyer. I have received training on many facets of the job, from legal training to pastoral care and guidance on networking. As a result of this, I believe I am well equipped to continue my progression at the firm and to take on further legal challenges!
