My experience as a trainee

Melissa Dix explains why she chose to apply for a Trainee Solicitor position at Bristows — and how she’s found the experience.

I studied History at university with the intention of completing a law conversion after graduation. Having developed an interest in IP law during the PGDL, I applied directly to Bristows for a training contract. I was particularly drawn to the firm’s focus on the life sciences and technology sectors, as well as its top-tier client base and friendly reputation.

Bristows’ application process was notably more straightforward than other firms. There was an initial application form leading to a short pre-recorded video interview, followed by two interviews and two written exercises. It was clear that the interviewers were genuinely interested in my background and motivations for applying to the firm, as well as my extra-curricular activities and wider interests. Although the questions were challenging and often tested my ability to think laterally, I was struck by the way in which the interviewers made me feel at ease. I also had the opportunity to speak to a current trainee during the application process, which provided further opportunity to find out more about the firm’s work and culture.

One year into the training contract, I have now completed seats in Regulatory and Patent Litigation. I have worked on a range of contentious and non-contentious matters and have been particularly impressed by the quality of both the trainee work and the supervision. Although there is significant variation between departments, typical trainee tasks include:

  • carrying out research on legal or technical points;
  • taking notes at calls with clients, counsel and witnesses;
  • creating and updating bundles for court hearings;
  • drafting basic letters to the other side’s solicitors.

Bristows in general is a very welcoming place to work and there are the numerous extra-curricular and social opportunities. For example, I regularly attend the Life Sciences Book Club, I am an active member of the Charities Committee and I recently took part in the firm’s inaugural ‘techathon’.
