I studied Law at university, and having completed an IP module, I applied to Bristows in my second year of undergraduate studies. I was particularly attracted to the firm’s specialist nature in life sciences and technology, as well as their friendly reputation and hands-on approach to training.

The application process was straightforward and designed to feel more natural and comfortable. It began with an initial application stage, followed by a video interview. This interactive format allowed me to showcase my personality and articulate what specifically attracted me to the firm. The subsequent two interviews further demonstrated the partners’ genuine interest in their candidates, as they asked questions aimed at understanding my interests and motivations. While some questions were challenging, the partners’ friendly approach made the process less daunting and helped me feel at ease. This tailored process, along with the genuine interest displayed by the interviewers and the intellectually stimulating questions, truly reflected Bristows’ culture, which made me confident that Bristows was the right place for me.

A year into my training at Bristows, I have completed two seats and am currently in my third. My first seat in Corporate, Tax, and Employment provided me with valuable experience in various transactional work. This was followed by my second seat in the Brands, Designs, and Copyrights Disputes team, where I was introduced to a range of soft IP matters. I am currently part of the Patent Litigation team. Although the first year of training has been overwhelming at times, I have learned an incredible amount and have been well-supported by my nurturing and encouraging seniors. My supervisors have shown a genuine commitment to my development, constantly seeking opportunities for me to further hone my skills. This ongoing dedication to providing feedback and support has made my first year of training incredibly rewarding.

My tasks across my seats have included:

  • Legal research on technical areas of the law
  • Attending witness interviews and assisting in the development of fact evidence
  • Completing a first draft of a witness statement
  • Drafting correspondence to opposing solicitors and the court
  • Case management through creating and updating bundles for court hearings
  • Taking notes during calls with clients and counsel
  • Attending court for case management conferences

Bristows has been a welcoming place to join, with various social networks and clubs. For instance, I am a committee member of the Lyda Network and a member of the Charities Committee. While training contracts are undoubtedly challenging and sometimes overwhelming, having the privilege to train at a firm that genuinely cares about your development and well-being makes a significant difference in your ability to push yourself to the best of your abilities.
