My experience as a trainee
Sze-Von Lam explains why she chose to apply for a Trainee Solicitor position at Bristows — and how she’s found the experience.

Before moving into law, I was a project manager at an edtech start-up, helping design coding toys for children. It was creative and hands-on, but I missed the language and writing side of my English degree. That curiosity took me to an internship in-house at a fintech, to legal innovation journalism, and then to building a machine-learning contract tool. Each step showed me how varied law can be, and I quickly realised I wanted to build my career somewhere where law, tech, creativity, and innovation come together.
Bristows kept coming up as one of the few firms genuinely at that intersection. As an IP-focused, full-service firm, it’s in a rare position to offer quality training across departments while also guaranteeing solid IP experience. I first met the firm at an Aspiring Solicitors Open Day and was struck by how open and genuine everyone was. Their close work with Aspiring Solicitors made the firm feel accessible – if you’re eligible under any of their strands, I would recommend reaching out.
Another thing that stood out was the small trainee intake. It’s clear how much the firm invests in each person’s development. That care showed through in the interview process too, which felt more like a conversation than a test. We covered everything – from recent museum exhibitions I’d visited to social mobility and why it matters. I left feeling like Bristows was more interested in how I think than just what I know.
Now, nearing the end of my first year of the training contract, I’ve (almost!) completed three seats:
- Competition – I have primarily worked on a long-running tech case, helping with disclosure, writing letters, and putting together witness evidence. Preparing for a preliminary issues trial and case management conference have been unique opportunities that have shown me how detailed and involved these cases can be.
- Corporate, Tax and Employment – This was a practical seat where I got to see how deals come together. My work involved company filings (Companies House truly became like a second home), drafting various ancillary documents and assisting with deal completions. Plus I helped the Employment team with settlement agreements and managing contracts across different countries during a restructuring.
- Commercial IP, IT and DCL – This seat was incredibly varied and gave me valuable contract drafting experience. I helped draft advice emails on AI, consumer, IP, IT, and data laws, reviewed pharma licensing and IT agreements, and put together bundles for a media case. I especially enjoyed learning about the safeguards needed when AI intersects with sensitive areas like mental health. I was also lucky to be involved in the negotiation cycle for a tech matter, which gave me real insight into how contracts come together.
One thing I’ve really appreciated at Bristows is how everyone embraces their interests – whether it’s theatre, baking, gaming, or sports. It makes conversations more relaxed and genuine. People are approachable, generous with their time, and genuinely curious. As a trainee, you quickly feel trusted, and that really changes the experience.
