My experience as a trainee

Kallie Botha explains why she chose to apply for a Trainee Solicitor position at Bristows — and how she’s found the experience.

I have had a passion for science, particularly biology, for most of my life. What began as a love of animals gradually evolved into a deep interest in molecular plant science and agricultural biotechnology. By the time I completed my Master’s degree in Biological Sciences and undertook an internship at a leading agricultural institute, it had become clear that while a research career would keep me closely connected to the science I loved, it would lack several elements that were important to me – collaboration, social connection and communication, and a clear path for career progression.

During my Master’s year, I explored several career options, including government policy work and becoming a patent attorney. However, a career as a solicitor, specifically a solicitor in a science-led firm like Bristows, quickly emerged as the clear choice.

I attended a STEM workshop day with Bristows which confirmed the firm’s strong reputation. I was struck by how genuine, kind, and friendly everyone was, with each person I met showing how deeply they valued working on high-profile, technically complex scientific and commercial matters whilst embracing a culture of friendliness and collaboration.

I secured my training contract with Bristows a few months into my GDL. The application process was clear and well-structured, with a strong focus on getting to know me as a person and understanding my interests and experiences. It involved a written application, a pre-recorded online interview, two live interviews, and a short written task. Despite the interviews taking place online (as I applied in 2021), I felt able to connect meaningfully with my interviewers and engage in thoughtful, interesting conversations about my motivations for pursuing a career in law (as well as some hobbies I shared with my interviewers!)

In my first year at Bristows, I have worked in the Patent Litigation, Brands, Design & Copyright, and Real Estate departments. Each seat has offered high-quality training, valuable experiences – such as participating in a three-week High Court trial with the Patent Litigation team – and opportunities to work independently and proactively. My tasks have included legal research, client correspondence, and drafting agreements and witness statements.

As a trainee, it is clear that Bristows has a supportive, friendly, and driven culture. Partners are approachable and invested in our development, and colleagues at all levels – both fee earners and support staff – are actively engaged in our training. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at the firm and look forward to tackling new legal challenges and continuing to build relationships across the firm over the rest of my training contract.
